Supporting at Home

To start with - check the book bag! As well as reading books or other homework, this is where you'll find letters from the school before it’s too late. Daily reading, weekly spelling and half termly homework will greatly benefit your child and of course, support the work we do in school.

Here are some other suggested ideas and resources when supporting your child at home....

Tips for Good Homework Habits:

  • Find a quiet place at home to use. It needs to have plenty of space, good light, a flat surface and the right equipment (e.g. pens, pencils, ruler).
  • Be aware of modern strategies for teaching methods (e.g. long division). Don't teach them the methods you used at school - it could confuse them. Ask your child's teacher if you are unsure.
  • Agree a homework plan with your child which states when your child will do their homework.
  • Make sure your child has had something nutritional to eat before starting any homework tasks.
  • Talk about any homework tasks with your child and try help them to see how it supports what they are studying at school.
  • Make sure the TV is turned off so they aren't distracted. They might want music on if it helps them.
  • Don't give your child the answer just so they can finish. Help them to research the answer (e.g. looking up information or using a dictionary).
  • Don't make homework a chore. Use games and a variety of ways to keep it a fun and special time that you both look forward to.
